New York Times’ loss narrows
NEW YORK, - The New York Times Co., the publisher of The New York Times, The Boston Globe and The International Herald-Tribune, reported a small loss on Thursday.
The loss came to 35.6 million U.S. dollars, or 25 cents per share, compared with a 106.3-million-dollar loss, or 74 cents a share in the same quarter a year ago.
Excluding unusual items, the company said it earned 16 cents per share in the quarter, compared with 5 cents a year ago.
Overall revenue fell 17 percent to 570.6 million dollars. Ad revenue fell 27 percent, while Internet ad revenue fell 8 percent, compared with a 16-percent decline in the quarter before.
The company is continuing to cut costs. Earlier this week, the company said it would have to cut 100 newsroom positions.
Shares of The New York Times jumped more than 16 percent to 10.17 dollars on the New York Stock Exchange.
